Remember that time we had no clue how to dig clams but we went clam digging and got 90? Well we are putting them to good use with one of my favorite recipes from my childhood. Another “Nana’s Famous” recipe if you will. And it’s so simple and yummy, Clam Dip in a bread bowl!
It’s one of my absolute favorite appetizers that my mom always made on Christmas Eve. And guess what? My mom is making it for our annual Christmas celebration with them! So it’s a great time to share with you.
For this recipe, you make a dip mixture and then cook it inside a bread bowl. I love bread and am convinced anything in a bread bowl is going to be wonderful. You can make the mixture the day of or even up to a day or so ahead. Then you just pour it into the hollowed out bread bowl, bake, and pull it out when you are ready to eat it!
And with all the extra bread you pulled out of the bread bowl, you break into little pieces and use that for dipping in the dip! The kids love this part (and so do I). Hence my fond memories of it!
Usually you use canned clams from the store but bonus for us: my mom is a seasoned canner and canned all those razor clams we dug at the coast in October!
This Clam Dip recipe is so simple I think it will become a new favorite for any get together. Try it this season with your holiday parties coming up and let me know in the comments what you think! If you want to check out another one of my other favorite appetizers, check out this Hummus Board Recipe. I can’t wait to share even more with you in the future.

Does this at all taste like clam chowder? I was in San Fran once and my husband introduced my to clam chowder in a sourdough bowl on Fisherman’s Wharf and I still dream about it!

Why bake it for so long?

Can you make the dip ahead of time, refrigerate over night, then transfer to bread bowl the next day for baking ?
