Say it with me. Garlic + ranch + chicken. It just goes together like butter on a fresh roll (PS. You have to try our roll recipe sometime)!
But those three things aren’t the secret ingredient here. It’s the buttermilk. And you have to make sure it’s real buttermilk because the consistency helps coat and soak the chicken to give it such a deep delicious flavor. Don’t be afraid to get messy here. Just mix up your buttermilk and seasonings in a bowl, add the chicken and go to town lathering it all up. You’ll feel like you really put your time in even though it takes no time at all!
From there it’s an easy dump on a pan and into the oven. I love these kinds of meals because it’s minimal cleanup and if needed, it’s a delicious and affordable meal for a big crowd. This will be a recipe that will stay in your dinner rotation often.
TIP** Make sure at the beginning of cooking to let the skins of the chicken thighs get a bit crispy and Golden before turning the oven down and covering them. This really adds to the flavor!
TIP2** Any cut of chicken will do! We just think thighs have some of the juiciest flavor.
Garlic Ranch Chicken Thighs
Ingredients
- 8-10 Bone-in skin-on Chicken thighs (May use other cuts of chicken, but these yield the best flavor in my opinion)
- 2 tbsp Garlic Salt
- 1 Ranch dip seasoning packet
- 1 tbsp Paprika, regular or smoked
- 2 tsp Kosher Salt
- 2 cups Buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to low broil (450°)
- Prepare edged pan with foil covering bottom and up the sides.
- Mix all seasonings and buttermilk in a bowl together.
- Trim chicken as necessary and pat thighs dry.
- Add thighs to mixture and coat thoroughly.
- Place thighs skin side up in pan. Pour extra sauce mixture over thighs as desired.
- Place in oven for 10 minutes
- Increase to high broil (500°) for 3-4 minutes or until skin begins to crisp and become golden.
- Turn oven down to 375°, cover chicken with tented foil and continue to cook chicken for 35-40 minutes or until internal temp of chicken is 165 degrees.
Jenalee
Trying this tonight!!
Sarah
JenaleeOh good! I hope you let me know what you think!
Shannon
Yum! Just checking are those Tablespoons or teaspoon measurements?
Sarah
ShannonHi Shannon! Those are all Tablespoon! Anything with tbsp is Tablespoon and tsp is Teaspoon! Sorry if that was confusing!
Lisa Miller
I’m going to try this tonight!!
Sarah
Lisa MillerAwesome! Let me know what you think!
Jackie
Is it an oven temp of 450 or just the broil setting? My oven doesn’t have temps for broil.
Sarah
JackieHi Jackie! Does your oven have a high broil and a low broil setting? I put mine on the low broil setting!
Serena
I just tried this and Its SO. Much. salt. I’m not sure how to save it. I’ll try this recipe again because I have faith! Maybe i will swap out the garlic salt and use Garlic Powder instead? I would love your thoughts on it!
Sarah
SerenaHi Serena! Thank you so much for the feedback! I have been eyeing it, so I have adjusted the recipe. Check it out again and let me know if you think that helped!
Claire
I’m in NZ so wondering how much ranch seasoning one packet is? We don’t have ranch seasoning in NZ so I’ve made my own and just not sure how much to add. Xx
Sarah Trondson
ClaireThe one I just used said net weight of 0.4oz or 11g. Hopefully that helps.
Linda
ClaireHi I am in NZ too, may I know how you made the seasoning please
Lyndsey S
I made this last night using what I think are the updates to the recipe- and it was amazing 🙌🏼. Cleanup was a breeze, kids loved it, and when I told my husband it was a recipe from a mom I follow on IG with a full house (we have 4 kids), he said “oh so that’s why it’s so good.” 😆 This is our new go-to meal! I made it with rice and a bagged salad and felt like I made my family a fancy meal after a long day. Thanks for sharing!
Sarah
Lyndsey SI LOVE hearing this! I’m so glad your family loved it!
Karey
I made this the other night and it was a ton of salt and paprika (the whole dish was pink because of all the paprika, haha) but I think with your adjustments it will be great next time I try making it again. Thank you!
Sarah
KareyThanks for the feedback! Let me know if you make it again with the adjustments and how you like it!
Julianne Peterson
My husband took one bite and said “OH YUM!” It was a hit With the kids too 😁
Sarah
Julianne PetersonOh yay! I’m so glad!
Jennifer McAllister
Just made it and it was soooo salty! Could not taste anything but the salt and had to scrap off all the skin and coating to just eat the chicken! The chicken was very moist but curious to try again and not add any extra tsp of salt! I would think the Garlic Salt would be enough? Anyone else try it and figure out good salt ratios with this? Thanks!
Sarah
Jennifer McAllisterHi Jennifer! Thanks so much for your feedback! I updated the recipe with all the feedback you all have given! Hope you try again and let me know what you think!
Alexa Kohtz
Made this tonight and it was great!! I feel like so often I have to leave chicken in the oven longer than what the recipe says but the time for this was perfect!!
Sarah
Alexa KohtzThat’s so great to hear! Thanks for the feedback!
Stephanie
I made this tonight and my insanely picky eaters ate the chicken to the bone! Sooooo good! Thank you!
Jane
I just made this and it is super salty, and I didn’t even add the salt. Should the recipe maybe be garlic powder instead of garlic salt?
Sadly this was a fail in our house
Sarah
JaneJane! I’m so sorry, i even adjusted it based on feedback and then I’ve heard people say its good now! I’m sorry it didn’t turn out for you!
Callista
Is the garlic salt supposed to be just garlic powder? It was so, soooooo salty. Four tablespoons is a TON of garlic salt, and there is also extra salt? There must be an error in the write up because we had to scrape off all of the sauce.
Rachel
CallistaThank you for sharing this recipe!! My kids, husband and I all loved it! My 5 year old son said, “this chicken is so good Mom, I could eat it for 100 years!” Please share more of your family favorite dinner recipes with us!!
Sarah
RachelOh I’m so glad! Thanks for saying that, I love your son already!!

Mallory
Just tried this and it was delicious. Hubby loved it, sadly toddler wouldn’t try it but fingers crossed for someday! It was so easy. I might halve the recipe for our small family next time but other than that I wouldn’t change anything. I broiled it for longer than the recipe suggested but I like chicken skin very crispy and I did pour quite a bit extra sauce on them. Thanks for sharing!
Sarah
MalloryI’m so glad Mallory! Thanks for sharing all that, I’m glad “most” of your family loved it!
Meghan
Making these tonight! I have it prepped just gotta put in oven. Looking good already!

Sarah
MaloryThat’s so awesome to hear Malory!
Jayna
Is this something that could be made in the instant pot? Thanks!
Sarah
JaynaHi Jayna! I have never done that so I’m not totally sure!
Allie
This was absolutely delicious! Even my picky husband and son loved it. I had planned this for supper last weekend with some hopes of some leftover chicken and then unexpectedly had my brother and his family over. I cooked extra potatoes and veggies than I had originally planned and had enough for everyone and they all enjoyed it!
My husband said to add to our rotation of meals for sure!
Sarah
AllieI love hearing that Allie- that’s the best review!
Kelly Lang
These look delicious! I need to try to bake them!
