Fall is such an amazing season for our family with Pumpkin Patches and U-Pick flower farms and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets and then you add in apples and I’m feeling so blessed! Since you know I’m a fruit girl, when we get to pick apples and make Apple Crisp Dessert I am totally in my happy place! Bonus for us is that our dear friend allows us to pick apples from his orchard each year which has become a special tradition for our family!
For my recipe, we start with Honeycrisp and Gala apples. Because they are already sweet- you can add a little less sugar. I’d say you need 8-10 apples for a 13×9 apple crisp. Just make sure the apples go a bit over the top of the pan since they will cook down.
I love to make them assembly line style with the boys. Peel, core, and slice the apples all at once with this amazing Apple Peeler. Kids love this part!
Next we prep the apple filling, make the crumble topping, and assemble the crisp. I try to think ahead and plan to make as many as I can at once. This recipe can be put in the freezer, which then makes for an easy dessert to pull out whenever needed but it also helps me have an easy dessert for when we take meals to other families. Because of this, I don’t bake before I freeze them. Instead, I wrap them in foil followed by cellophane. On the top of the foil I write in sharpie something like “apple crisp- thaw and bake at 350° for 45 minutes”. Makes it easy for other people I may gift them to.
Of course-we always taste test and bake one or two right away. We use disposable 9×9 or 13×9 pans so they are ready to give away and no one has to return a pan. You can buy the disposable 9×9 pans here and the 13×9 size here.
My favorite tip: use melted better for the topping versus cutting butter into chunks. It makes a better consistency of crumble topping and cooks up nice and crisp with a good crunch just like you hope for! No dry burnt topping.
Grab yourself some apples, make my apple crisp dessert, top yours with ice cream and enjoy! Share one with a friend or wrap them in foil & plastic wrap to give away later. Either way you are sure to enjoy this recipe! Let me know when you make it yourself.

Can I cut the recipe in half and us 8×8? Would the cook time be different?
Sarah
BethYes you totally can, cook time would still be similar, maybe 10-15 minutes less!
