There are a lot of sugar cookie recipes out there, but I’m here to share ours.
Sugar cookies are such a fun thing to make and eat. There are so many occasions to make sugar cookies but I think we can all agree that Christmas tops the list. Our family does what we call a ‘Framily’ Christmas Party every year, and I always look forward to it. Everyone wears their Christmas jammies, we decorate cookies, and then we eat cookies. Pretty good party in my book.
Now, there are a lot of techniques to sugar cookies, and the recipes vary in order to get those desired results. Here’s what I’m gonna say. These sugar cookies taste amazing. There are other recipes that hold their shape better than this one, but I honestly think taste is sacrificed to get there. That’s why I love these so much- a classic great tasting sugar cookie, topped with buttercream frosting (and don’t skimp here), and decorated to your hearts content.
Step 1: Make the dough. Cream the first 4 ingredients, then blend in the rest.
Step 2: Seperate the dough into portioned discs and refrigerate until you are ready to roll out. You can roll out the dough right away, or give them 30 minutes of chill time first. Doing these discs make it so easy once you are ready to start cutting shapes. Highly recommend.
Step 3: Cut into desired shapes and bake for 7-8 minutes. Let your cookies cool before you frost them. You can also make them ahead of time and freeze until you are ready to frost and decorate.
Step 4: Make your buttercream frosting. 1 batch of this recipe frosts 1 batch of sugar cookies.
Step 5: Frost, Decorate, and Enjoy!

Nana’s Famous Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup Butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1 1/2 tsp Vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups Flour
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 tsp Cream of Tartar
Instructions
- Mix Butter, Powdered Sugar, Egg and Vanilla.
- Blend in Flour, Baking Soda and Cream of Tartar
- Chill dough for 30 minutes.
- Roll out dough 1/4'' thick on lightly floured surface.
- Heat oven to 375 degrees.
- Cut into desired shapes.
- Bake for 7-8 minutes.
Notes
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients
- 3 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1/3 cup Butter, softened
- 1 1/2 tsp Vanilla
- 1-2 tbsp Milk
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix powdered sugar and butter with an electric mixer on low speed.
- Stir in Vanilla and 1 tablespoon of Milk.
- Gradually beat in just enough remaining milk to make frosting smooth and spreadable. If frosting is too thick, beat in more milk, a few drops at a time. If frosting becomes too thin, beat in a small amount of powdered sugar.

I love the name of these cookies! They remind me of my first husband’s Mom. We call her Nana. My husband passed away suddenly 6 years ago at 31 from a widow maker heartattack.
When we dated he sent me a picture of him making and decorating cookies with his mom. It then became a tradion to make and decorate cookies with Nana and our 4 children. I still talk to her daily and she just showed me her table full of cookies to be iced!
God has been so good and blessed me with my husband now and a new little boy whose name is Bekhum!

I have questions. First of all, cream of tartar seems to be a hard ingredient to come by in Germany. Any idea if I can substitute for baking powder or soda? And secondly, I am wondering if the frosting hardens much?
I have to make one more batch for my kid’s kindergarten teachers and if I can find a substitute for the Cream of tartar these will be high on the list for a new sugar cookie as these look DELICIOUS!
Side note: also wanna try the monkey bread but have no regular biscuit dough available from the can. Shall try with either the breakfast rolls or with homemade biscuit dough if ya think it could work?

Thanks for sharing the recipe, Sarah! This is close to the recipe I use!! My best tip for sugar cookies is to flatten the dough between 2 pieces of parchment paper. You don’t actually roll the rolling pin but glide it across the top to more easily make flat dough.
