As we prepare to meet our sweet baby girl, I’m also prepping every area of my house for her arrival. We have diaper baskets in multiple areas of the house, little areas for her to lay and sleep, clothes all folded in her dresser, you name it. Now that all the areas of our home are ready for her, I decided to get all my postpartum must haves set up. It’s not glamorous, but it is SO necessary.
As many of you know, it’s hard to take care of yourself postpartum when you have a brand new baby that is keeping you constantly busy (and possibly a few older siblings as well). I know for me that if I have what I need for myself prepped and ready to go, it helps me actually do those things I need for my own healing. And what does that ‘prepped and ready to go’ look like? Glad you asked. Supply baskets of course.
I like to keep a basket (or tub) of supplies in a few key places.
Supplies by the Toilet
I keep one in my bathroom right by my toilet. This one holds a squirt bottle (this or this is great), extra pads, hospital underwear, tucks, and dermoplast. You have to go to the bathroom, so if you have your supplies right there ready to go, you are far more likely to take those extra steps of healing while you are already there. Changing your underwear, your pads, etc.
Supplies in your shower
Take a little shower bin, just like in college, and put it in your shower for the next month. I like to keep washcloths, a squirt bottle (buy a pack like I mentioned above and split between these areas), and other basic shower supplies.
supplies on your nightstand
This one is just as important as the others, since you will be awake through the night nursing that cute new baby. In this one I like to keep nipple cream, nursing pads (disposable or washable), burp clothes, and food. Don’t neglect that last one. Some of my favorite things to have on hand in the night are granola bars, muffins, and a water bottle (Stanley Quencher of course). Keep 2-3 muffins in a ziplock bag and eat one each time you wake up to nurse.
Supplies for everywhere
One very important item I always have is my hemorrhoid pad. I carry that wherever I need around the house. It’s not just for hemorrhoids. It relieves pressure off the pelvic area when you sit and helps with healing. Finally, don’t forget ice packs. You can buy gel ice packs anywhere, or you can make your own diaper padsicles. Just take a newborn diaper, spread open the middle lining, fill with crushed ice, spray with dermaplast, and line with a few tucks. Voila! You have the best way to ice your perineum area that’s comfortable and less expensive.
I hope this helps give you ideas and a plan for coming home after baby. These are very simple, but I really thing setting yourself up for success with these postpartum must haves will help your body heal faster so you are better able to enjoy your time with your baby. And that is the real goal here. Being a new mom is so hard and amazing at the same time. If you take care of your body, you get to enjoy the reward way sooner!

These are things that I sometimes buy a new mom-to-be for a gift. Granted, itβs always a family member or someone I am very close to, but honestly, they get so much baby stuff and sometimes donβt think about themselves. I made up a basketful for my oldest granddaughter when she was having her first baby. She loved it and when they were pregnant a second time, she requested it!
