I am going to confidently say that most people reading this have been on the giving or receiving end of a meal in time of need. Maybe you welcomed a new baby into your family, lost a loved one, or just had a hard week and someone showed up to bless you. Or maybe you are the one that just loves to find an opportunity to show love with a fresh hot meal when people need it most. After receiving meals for almost a month now, I thought it would be a perfect time to share them all to give you meal train ideas when you are taking a meal to a family.
I know when you are on the giving end of preparing a meal for someone it can be overwhelming. It’s a good thing- you want the family to love it. You want to make sure you make something that both the kids and adults will like. Are you making enough? Will it stay hot while you transfer from your house to theirs? What do I take it all in to make it easiest for the family?
The first thing I want to say is this: no matter what you bring or how you bring it, please know that what you are doing is a huge blessing. It’s a tangible way to show love to a neighbor, family, or friend and that love goes a long way.
A couple more tips to share before I share all the meal train ideas. First, use disposable pans or take and toss Tupperware if possible. You know those yogurt containers you throw away each week? Or sour cream, salsa, you name it- those are great to use for little sides or sauces you are taking with your dish. Save them for times like this. For the main dish you can stock up on disposable pans of all sizes at the grocery store. It’s helpful to everyone involved if you don’t have to go pick up any dishes later, and the family can just throw away things when they are done.
Now let’s get to the actual meal ideas. These are in no particular order, but I included all the meals people brought our family after Lucy was born, along with some of MY favorite meals to take other families.

I like to bring a quiche & salad just like you showed, add toppings to the salad container & bring a dressing on the side). I buy a ceramic pie plate for the family to have as a keepsake (a giving pie plate; so they can use it to bless another family), get 1/2 dozen eggs & chop all the veggies (broccoli, asparagus, leeks, peppers, shallots, spinach, mushrooms, onion, chives, etc…all depending on the type of quiche), bacon, sausage, ham, pancetta (prep everything by pre-sautéing), cheese (Swiss, Gruyère, cheddar), a small container of cream from a local farmstand, I put everything separately in small throwaway containers. I either make a crust or send a pre-packaged, refrigerated one (it all depends on how much time I have). I always add a simple dessert like a lemon pound cake or cookies. I like to make it look really pretty so I usually gift wrap the box I’m going to put it all in. Add a small bouquet of fresh flowers. Then I write the instructions on a card & on the envelope I write “congratulations, hugs & quiches” (or whatever is appropriate for the occasion). It’s fun to put together & that’s typically what I make for us for dinner when I’m doing this. I’ve been doing this for years!!

And one more tip as someone who just had the blessing of receiving meals when our lady baby was born a couple months ago, PLEASE PLEASE don’t plan to just drop dinner off in your instant pot/slow cooker. So if I make people a dinner (bear with me I live in Texas) 😂 I make a Mexican dish! It’s super filling and super easy and SUPER delicious!
Ingredients
2 cans of enchilada sauce
Ground beef
Pack of 20 corn tortillas
1 can of Cream of mushroom
Medium size bag of Mexican cheese
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2.Brown the ground beef in a large frying pan
3. Once meat is brown add the cans of enchilada sauce and cream of mushroom soup and heat till it bubbles a little bit and all ingredients are mixed in.
4. In a glass dish 13X9 size is what I use pour a bit of the made sauce in the bottom of the dish, then roll up cheese into all the tortillas.
5. Once finished to where the pan is full, pour the rest of the heated sauce on top of the rolled up tortillas.
6. Add as much cheese as desired to the top of the dish.
7. Cook them at 350 degrees for about 25-27 minutes.
8. Let it set them serve with either refried beans or Spanish rice.
Great as leftovers too!!!

Sometimes a frozen meal is nice in case they don’t actually need it that particular night. Something I like to do especially in the case of an unfortunate death is to bring in a basket with paper goods, i.e. paper towels, plates, cups or silverware. Also things like disposable containers, trash bags and even toilet paper. These are usually things you are using a lot of with people in and out and you most likely don’t have time to restock with everything else going on. Just thought I’d share that. Thanks. 😊
Susan H.

Chicken breast or thighs w/ dried beef and provolone laid on top then equal parts cream of chicken soup and sour cream mixed together and spread over top of chicken bake covered for 35-45 mins at 400 remove cover and sprinkle on box of dried stovetop and bake for another 15mins
(We usually use 2 cans of soup and one 16oz sour cream for 6 breasts or thighs)
Serve with rice and usually green beans or asparagus
If I’m taking it to someone sometimes, I will precook and then let them reheat in oven and it’s just as good

I love reading these Ideas! I like bringing Tortellini Spinach Bacon Bake (from Our Best Bites) and salad, sweet and sour chicken and rice and broccoli, Korean beef and rice, roasted carrots, quick cucumber pickles and peas, Honey lime chicken enchiladas and Spanish rice and salad, lasagna and roasted veggie or a new one we’ve liked is chicken cordon bleu casserole. Most of these recipes are on Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. Whatever I bring, I try to bring in disposable containers (yogurt containers and foil pans and take out containers). Returning Tupperware with a new mama tired brain is hard!

I truly wish someone did this for us when our twins were born and my husband was deployed. It was me and 4 children 3 and under. It was so hard. This village you’ve created is beautiful. I’m not a believer in religion. I wish there were ways to build this type of village outside of a church. So grateful to watch and read all your words of encouragement even though we may have totally different beliefs. You’re incredible

I usually make Lazy Lasagna. So easy and delicious.
Ingredients
1 (25 oz bag) frozen ravioli
1 (24 oz jar) marinara sauce
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/3 cup parmesan cheese for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
Spread about 3/4 cup of your marinara sauce into the bottom of your baking dish.
Arrange half of the frozen ravioli in a single layer over the sauce.
Top with half of the remaining sauce and half of the mozzarella cheese.
Repeat the layers starting with what’s left of the frozen ravioli. Finish by topping with the remainder of the sauce and mozzarella. Sprinkle with parmesan if you’d like.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and starting to brown.
Let it cool for 5-10 minutes, and then serve alone or with garlic bread, salad or veggies. Enjoy!

I have done a few times now cubed sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, and beets, asparagus pieces(green adds colour) tossed in a bit of olive oil and vegetable seasoning put on a baking sheet (or two depending on size of family)- then on the sheet I add seasoned chicken thighs! Especially in fall it’s a yummy harvesty type meal needs to cook for about an hour and I flip the veggies once or twice! I either will precook and bring at meal time or have it all prepped and they just have to throw it in the oven an hour before wanting to eat!

First off, wow! Lots of replies with awesome ideas! I have given the following dish cause it’s super easy. Poppyseed chicken. Lay boneless chicken breasts, tenders or thighs in bottom of greased 9×13 pan. Mix together one can cream of chicken soup, a pint of sour cream and 2 tablespoons of poppy seedy. Pour over chicken and spread out. Then melt one stick of butter and crunch a sleeve of townhouse crackers. Mix them together and add 2 tablespoons of poppy seed. Get your hands down in that bowl and mix it up, then grab that gooey stuff and sprinkle over the soup mixture. Bake uncovered at 375 for 45 min. I serve it with rice or mashed potatoes and cooked carrots.
