Valentine’s Day is special and fun and can be a memorable day. It can also feel overwhelming because there are so many ideas out there, and they can get extensive and expensive. I want to give you some family Valentine’s day ideas that are not only simple, but really sweet for your kids! These ideas include the oldest all the way down to the youngest and everyone can enjoy them! Fun for all.
Heart-shaped door hangers
These door hangers are so cute and fun. You simply cut two big hearts out of construction paper, then staple or string them together to create a pouch. Punch two holes at the top edges of each heart, and use string to create a way to hang them. Decorate them any way you want. It’s fun to add each chid’s name and maybe stickers, or coloring, or even jewels. Use command strips on the outside of your child’s bedroom door, and hang each persons Valentine heart.
You can start these any day you want, but ideally it’s fun to have them up for a week or so before Valentine’s Day so anyone can write little valentines and pop them in each others’ pouches. I like to pop different things in each child’s through the week(s). Sometimes it’s little cards, maybe a little candy, or even a small gift card to a fun place in town.
Balloon + JElly Bellies
This is a tradition from my childhood that I have carried on with my kids. Growing up, my dad always sent us girls a balloon with jelly bellies at the bottom wherever we were on Valentine’s Day. Getting those at school and anywhere else just always made me feel so loved and it’s something that I immediately started doing for my kids when I could. Of course it’s simple, but sometimes the simplest of things done with love are the most memorable and special. Everyone likes balloons and everyone likes a little candy. So if you need something super easy, try this out.
Kid’s Charcuterie
Tim and I don’t typically go out for Valentine’s Day. Honestly, I just love doing something at home with the whole family. It’s relaxed, I don’t have to make a reservation, and we all get to enjoy it together. One thing I love doing is a family Valentine’s Day charcuterie. You can do ANYTHING here, just lay it all out on the table for serving. Anything red and pink are the stars of the show, but here’s a little list of options you may include:
Chocolate dipped strawberries, frosted animal cookies, pink wafer cookies, pink and red jelly bellies, red grapes (or any fruit) with Nana’s Famous Fruit Dip, popcorn, crackers, meat, cheese, conversation hearts, pink packaged Hershey kisses, yogurt covered pretzels, and either sparkling cider or our fun Pop Rock Spritzer Drink.
Freeze Dried Candies
I can’t leave this one out because you know our valentines this year are going to have our new freeze dried candies in them (check out our new freeze dryer on sale here). We have been trying SO many fun things this past month, some successes and some failures too. It’s all been a fun learning experience though. The boys and I are excited to hand out this unique treat as part of their DIY valentines for friends/cousins this year. They are even doing all the freeze drying themselves because it’s that easy.
And since I know not everyone has a freeze drier, you can go to Amazon and buy a pack of freeze dried skittles (we love this company) and divide them up in little baggies for your kid’s different valentines. Trust me- it is such a fun unique treat to share and try and there are plenty in one bag!
One more thing I’ve learned and am continuing to learn as a Mom is adaptability. Something (like one of these ideas) may work awesome for 5 years. At some point, it may not be the best fit for your family, and that’s ok. It worked great for a season, and it’s ok to change traditions. It’s good even. Maybe one of these ideas (or one of your own) will carry on forever, and maybe they won’t. Either way, they can be special and memorable for the time that you use them, and we can create new ones that fit with our ever-growing families.
I hope you find these ideas not only simple and doable, but FUN. That’s the point. We can all enjoy this special day that is meant to show love to others, and it doesn’t have to break the bank or break your sanity. These family Valentine’s Day traditions have become really special and memorable in my own family, and I hope one of them could be a new tradition in yours. Please let me know if you try one, I’d love to hear!

Aww the balloon and jellies from your dad is the sweetest. I loved when my dad would do something special just for me and not the brothers 😉. I will have to have my husband start something for our adult daughters and something else for the sons, maybe from just me. I wish charcuterie boards were more popular when my kids were little. Love the ideas and the folders on the doors. Great ideas!!
Here’s one a friend and I did for our kids one April Fools day. We told them they could have dessert first, which was meatloaf as “ cake” bottom and colored mashed potato’s as “frosting”. (Cupcake) And food I think was pound cake but forget what we decorated it as. lol. Memory. They were very skeptical. Ha. But we had fun!! 🤩

Valentines Day is always very special to me. In 1996 my 3rd child(who was 6yrs old) suffered from meningococcal septicemia with total renal failure. He had less than 10%chance of survival and if he did he would have physical or mental deficit.
On 2.14.96 he recieved last rights from a priest for the 2nd time.
I prayed for the Lord to save my son and he did that day. This happened again on 2.16.96, but on that day I told my son if he saw Jesus it was ok to go to him, that Momma would be ok. Well, the LORD had another plan for this boy. He not only survived with no physical or mental deficits, he graduated college, was an MMA fighter and now runs ultra marathons(the 50 and 100 miles runs) and is a healthy 34 year old man. Valentines day will always be a celebration of my undying love for the Lord and for my children.
I tell everyone I meet… hug your babies every single day.. they grow so fast and you never know what tomorrow can bring. ❤❤
Sorry this wasn’t a fun comment but I like to share our story to show the miracles the Lord does and why Valentines is so special to family. And in case you were wondering.. YES,they all get Valentines Day treats delivered to them each year by their Momma❤
Luz
Jennifer KurtWow!!! My momma heart!!!! You are so right about how fast they grow!! My kids are already 14 & 16!! How did that happen!! 😢😭😢😭 I know they are supposed to but it does go by so fast!

Tons of valentine crafts fill our day. We always do Valentine’s Day dinner as a family and it’s always something special that we don’t normally do. Special festive drinks for all the kids, a fancy at home dinner and lots of talking about how Jesus loves and that we want to be and love like Him.

In my kindergarten class we would make our own mailman mail bags n at our class party take turns “mailing” cards to our classmates ! The kids loved this n then could carry their mailbags home over their shoulders like a real mail person !
Ashley Schranz
We love doing the charcuterie boards for a fun snacky supper. I think the balloons with some candies for each kiddo is SUCH a fun idea and one I might just do! Themed parties are something I’ve always really enjoyed, but it’s not always good for a budget and so simple and fun is how I like to do it. Staying in is my favorite too and we call it “I love you day” – last year we all dressed up in costumes and played and ate our festive supper.
Sarah Keenan
Valentine’s Day is so fun and is a great day to show love to your kids and close friends! We too did the Dollar store heart shape balloons for our four kids. We also always bought heart shape pizza from Papa Murthy’s. Now that they are grown and out of our home we send a Valentine card with a gift card to a local restaurant in their area.
These small traditions stay with our kids and they feel so loved!
I also send Valentine notes to my closest friends each year. Getting personal mail is a rare thing and it shows you love them!
Christina
Wishing you all a fun Valentine’s Day 💌💘 with lots of love 💖! I loved doing special things with my little ones and now they are grown up.
Kristine McBride
Cute and simple is the best❤️ we will be doing something very simple this year at home, since my husband just had a total knee replacement. Honestly this has been a month of showing my love by just taking care of him. Simple enough, but lots of work!

My dad used to make our valentines days so special. He worked at a grocery store so he would snag little Valentine’s Day cakes the night before and leave them at our places for breakfast. I love and appreciate Valentine’s day celebrated as a family. Once our son was born and he was old enough to start celebrating with us, we created a tradition of a movie night with pizza and candy, just the 3 of us. He’s 14 now and still looks forward to our Vday evening together as a family!

That is so cool! I love the hanging heart!
I’m going to put myself out there. And maybe give another perspective. (Don’t think the worst of me! Lol)
How many times this week has some one told you they love you? Several times a day, maybe after every phone call? Maybe when you go to bed at night? This week I’ve only heard those word twice (love you momma!) I’m telling you this for a reason.
In two weeks comes my most dreaded holiday. Valentine’s day. The day I wonder what’s wrong with me why am I not good enough. (BTW God thinks I’m great just the way I am!) Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way but I somehow doubt that.
You all have to know of somebody with out that “special someone” in there life. Maybe that person never showed up, maybe they are now an Ex or maybe they are no longer in this world.
This Valentine’s Day PLEASE take your lady out to eat. PLEASE do something special for your guy. PLEASE share your pictures.
But please take a second to make that somebody without a special someone know that they are cared for too! A simple text goes along way!
I really hope this makes sense and you understand my heart!
I want to add something. I’m not dissatisfied with my life! I’m right were God wants me! I just want to remind you that Valentine’s day can be difficult sometimes….
Lauren

So fun! What a great post! V’Day is my very favourite holiday! One of my favourite things I always did with my kids (and now grandbabies) is a special valentine dinner party! I decorate the room and table and everything is red, pink and white and/or heart shaped. I’ve made: heart shaped mini or large meatloaf with ketchup on top, x and I shaped biscuits, pink milk or fruit punch mixed with 7Up topped with vanilla or strawberry ice cream, heart shaped pizzas we make together, and a variety of desserts. They love it especially when I tell them I wanted to spend Valentines Day with who I love the most! Them! 😊❤️

I love these ideas and especially the idea of some things working great for a time. I’ve had the thought that I need to make sure I start good traditions when the kids are little and never miss a year, but I think the idea of making every season special in whatever way is loving and joyful is really the key! That’s the part that would make traditions fun anyway.

Ann Minnick
I love that you have carried on traditions from your childhood, like the balloon, with the jelly bellies that your dad did for you and your sisters. And I love that you and Tim celebrate Valentine’s Day with your kids instead of going out. Restaurants are too crazy around that time anyway. Our kids are grown, and now we have two small grandchildren and one on the way. We give small gifts to them like books to the grandchildren with a personalized note inside, so they can look back later and remember when the book was given to them. I love reading about you and your beautiful family. You and Tim are doing a marvelous job!
Courtney
Such adorable ideas! I always wanted to be this fun mom that goes all out… but hen having a baby every couple years over the last 10 year did me in… I hop to get better at it as my kids get older.

We got married on Feb. 19 so we never went out on Valentine’s Day. Like you, we celebrated as a family (served a red dinner). Two years ago our son and his wife had a small wedding in February and then a big wedding in Italy in April. So, we celebrate their “first” anniversary together by taking them out for a nice dinner. ❣️

I’ve never been big on Valentine’s Day, but in the last couple years I’ve found myself loving it more and more with my kiddos. Similarly to your jelly beans and balloon, I have small gift bags for our children. Usually not just candy but sometimes pencils, erasers or “tiny toys.”

I love the door hanger. Since my first born was probably 4, 19 1/2 now, I would just get the small box of chocolate candies & make him a homemade card. Dinner was always heart shaped pancakes. I do the same with my 8yo. He likes to find the same box of chocolates every year for his brother “Game On” lol

Tara McGaugh
Such cute ideas! I always leave a trail of heart shaped cutouts from their bedroom down down the stairs to the kitchen table on Valentine’s Day morning where they find simple goodies there for them. It’s an easy thing to do, but my kids love it and look forward to it every year!
Rhonda Fenderson
These are the best ideas amd so simple. I’ll be tryong a few of these for Valentines. We stay in too as a family and enjoy aome food amd fun♥️

Growing up my dad always gave us a gift or little box of chocolates and a Valentine card. They meant so much to me. I have a very special Valentine card he sent me after I was married for a few years. He wrote the sweetest things. I still have that card and treasure it, especially now that he’s gone.
Judie
That photo of Griffy is so great! I like to put a pretty tablecloth out and a small chocolate box at the breakfast table for each kid. We usually make cards together for Daddy. The little things are what memories are made of.
Elaine Flanagan
Freeze dried candies! Oh my goodness!

Linda
Love these ideas! Thanks for sharing. Making your own heart pouch is a great idea! My kids will love that! My favorite tradition is putting a heart on their door leading up to Valentine’s Day that says something that we love about them or something they’re good at. They look forward to checking their doors in the morning to see what was left!
Holly Harvey
How fun!! Definitely starting some traditions with our littles this year because they are going to be able to remember-which just adds a whole layer of fun! Will be working with them to decorate their door this year and will have our traditional heart shaped pizza for dinner 😍😋
Tina Jackson
I LOVE these ideas. My oldest son is married & has his own family. My other son is so busy with finishing up HS a year early, hanging out with his girl as many waking minutes as possible, & working or looking for work that it’s hard to get a conversation in or to truly know his heart these days. My husband of 32+ years is a good man & im looking forward to what he may do this year. 😊
I’ve always done a Valentine bag of goodies for my loves. This year will be no different; it just now includes a second grand & a future daughter-in-heart. I particularly love the charcuterie idea since it’s all age friendly. I will spend V day working in my friends florist but I think we can celebrate 💖 any day. 😍
